INDIAN WELLS, March 12, 2017

Vasek Pospisil scored his career best win on Saturday at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, knocking out the tournament’s top seed Andy Murray 6-4, 7-6 to reach the third round of the ATP Masters 1000 event.

“If I pick a handful of great moments in my career, this is definitely one of them,” said Pospisil after the one hour and 51 minutes encounter. “To beat the No. 1 player and somebody as accomplished as Andy, one of the greats of the game, is amazing.”

The 26-year-old Canadian has experienced a turbulent year 2016, seeing his position in the Emirates ATP Rankings drop to World No. 135, having been as high as No. 25 three years ago. His long time doubles partnership with Jack Sock ended in July 2016 and by the end of last year, Pospisil started to work with his new coach Mark Woodforde and seems to get back at his best.

“Just personal things, professional things. Obviously I do not want to get into all of the details but it was a very distracting year – a lot of stuff going on off the courts. Just wanted myself really, the player I have been my whole career, loving competition and being out there. Just kind of went through a little bit of a lull personally, and just kind of found my hunger again,” told Pospisil, who captured his last title in 2013, winning the ATP Challenger in Vancouver.

“That actually lasted almost the whole year, a long period of time. But I feel like I came out a little bit more wise about life. That’s why I am now enjoying my time on court so much more these days. So I think, last year was a kind of a learning process. I think that everybody goes through it to some degree. I think, everybody has those kind of periods in their lives, and mine was last year.”

In the Californian desert, Pospisil will next take on Dusan Lajovic from Serbia.
