Alexander Zverev Leads The Field At BMW Open In Munich

BMW Open by FWU presentation in Munich

MUNICH, March 22, 2018

Organizers of the BMW Open by FWU presented the official line-up at the BMW Lenbachplatz in Munich on Thursday afternoon. The field is led by defending champion and World No. 5 Alexander Zverev, who clinched the title of the ATP 250 clay court event last year.

The 20-year-old German will be joined by almost all of his top-ranked compatriots: three-time winner Philipp Kohlschreiber, veteran Florian Mayer as well as young gun Maximilian Marterer. “It has been our goal to present the best German players in Munich. With Peter Gojowczyk only one name is missing, but he told me that he wants to focus on the bigger tournaments,” tournament director Patrik Kühnen explained.

With Roberto Bautista Agut, Fabio Fognini and Gael Monfils, a trio of FWU-players will come back to the venue of the MTTC Iphitos. All of them are in good shape, having already clinched three titles this season. Monfils opened the season by winning the Qatar Exxon Mobil Open in Doha, Fognini returned to the winners’ circle by lifting the trophy in Rio de Janeiro and Bautista Agut celebrated the biggest triumph in his career at the ATP 500 Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.

Andrey Rublev of Russia and Korea’s Hyeon Chung will represent the #NextGenATP players in Bavaria’s picturesque capital city. In-form Hungarian Marton Fucsovics, who is currently ranked on a career high World No. 60, could be one of the tournament’s dark horses.

“This has been the strongest line-up since I have started as tournament director 11 years ago,” Kühnen is pleased with the entry list. “The field is wide open and it will be interesting to see, who will emerge victorious and get the Lederhosen after Sunday’s singles final.”

A special incentive for the players will be a BMW i8 Roadster, which will be awarded to the tournament’s champion. The BMW Open by FWU with a total prize money of €561,345 is the first of four German events on the season’s ATP World Tour calendar, held from 30 April to 6 May 2018.
