Alessandro Basso of Italy racked up his fifth match win this week, reaching the quarterfinals of the $100,000 CDMX Open at the Club Deportivo Chapultepec. The 24-year-old battled through the qualifying and beat British teenager Jay Clarke on Wednesday 6-4, 6-4 to reach the stage of the final four.
Basso sent down six aces, saved four of the six break points he faced, converting all four of his own to prevail after one hour and 28 minutes. The World No. 335 will next challenge Roberto Quiroz of Ecuador. The 23-year-old from Guayaquil rallied past No. 8 seed Pedja Krstin of Serbia 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. The encounter lasted one hour and 47 minutes.
Daniel Elahi Galan of Colombia knocked out the tournament’s No. 6 Victor Estrella Burgos from the Dominican Republic 4-6, 7-6, 6-2. The 21-year-old from Bogota sent down seven aces, winning 71 per cent of his first service points to secure victory in two hours and five minutes. Next up for Elahi Galan will be No. 4 seed Adrián Menéndez-Maceiras of Spain, who fought past Brazilian Joao Souza 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 in two hours and six minutes.
