NEW YORK, September 2, 2018
In Saturday’s night session at the US Open, Marin Cilic fought past #NextGenATP teenager Alex de Minaur, who appeared in his second staight Grand Slam third round, 4-6, 3-6 6-3, 6-4, 7-5.
In the pair’s first meeting, de Minaur pulled from 2-5 to 5-5 in the fifth set, saving seven match points but eventually lost his serve in the 12th game. Cilic secured victory on Louis Armstrong Stadium in just under four hours of play. The five-set battle finished at 2:22 am local time, the fourth latest finish in the history of the US Open.
“It’s has been incredible atmosphere. Alex showed incredible fighting spirit. This is a moment to remember coming back from 2-0 sets down,” Cilic said during his post-match on-court interview.
The round of 16 line-up has now been completed. This will await us in the second week at Flushing Meadows:
