Denis Istomin has claimed his first tour-title of the season, winning the Oracle Challenger Series held at the XS Tennis Village in Chicago. The No. 2 seed from Uzbekistan beat US-American Reilly Opelka 6-4, 6-2 in Sunday’s final of the $150,000 ATP Challenger event.
Istomin withstood 13 aces and broke his opponent three times to prevail after one hour and eight minutes.
The Chicago event was Istomin’s first Oracle Challenger Series. “I really enjoyed being here and playing here, it is a very nice organization. This was a really, really nice tournament,” the 32-year-old complimented and took away $21,600 in prize money as well as 125 ATP-Ranking points.
It was Istomin’s 11th ATP Challenger career title, his first since Tashkent 2015.
Martic wins women’s event
Petra Martic is the winner of the $125,000 WTA women’s event. The 27-year-old Croatian beat Mona Barthel of Germany 6-4, 6-1 in one hour and seven minutes.
The current World No. 47 has had quite the year, reaching the finals in Bucharest and the quarterfinals in Indian Wells. “With this title, I achieved [my goal for the year],” said Martic with a smile. “It was to get to the top 40, so I’m pretty happy.”
