Three of the tournament’s seeds were defeated on opening day of the Atlantic Tire Championships. The No. 1 seed Peter Polansky from Canada was defeated by Alejandro Gonzalez of Colombia 6-3, 6-4 in just over ninety minutes. Polansky saved seven of the ten break points he faced, while Gonzalez saved four of the five break points he faced. This was the fourth meeting for Polansky and Gonzalez.
Jose Hernandez-Fernandez of the Domenican Republiv knocked out No. 2 seed Elias Ymer of Sweden. Named one of the top players to watch during the 2018 Challenger Tour, Ymer was only able to convert on two of seven break points. Hernandez-Fernandez won 54 per cent of the total points played to advance in one hour and 26 minutes.
On Tuesday, returning 2017 Champion Kevin King will begin his efforts to defend his title. Other top names playing include Ernesto Escobedo, recent Oracle Challenger finalist Reilly Opelka and Donald Young.
The Atlantic Tire Championships are held at Cary Tennis Park. The field for this $50,000 ATP Challenger hard-court event features 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams. Tickets can be purchased online at the tournament website www.atlantictirechampionships.com, or at the Cary Tennis Park.
