TALLAHASSEE, April 26, 2019 (Press Release)
Day four at the Tallahassee Tennis Challenger has come and gone, and with that the quarter-finals are all squared up ahead of Friday. Defending champion Noah Rubin kept his hopes of a title repeat in Tallahassee alive, after defeating No. 13 seed Evgeny Karlovskiy.
The Russian took the opening set 6-3 in a rather routine fashion, but Rubin was able to dig in, taking the second set and forcing a third. In the final set, the American survived a late surge from Karlovskiy and closed out the match with a final score of 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.
Next up, No. 2 seed Tennys Sandgren took to the court against Switzerland’s Sandro Ehrat. Sandgren raced through the first set 6-3, but in the second set, Ehrat was able to keep it neck and neck to force a tiebreak and take the set 7-6(5). In the decisive set, Sandgren took the break he desperately needed and finished the match with a 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-4 win.
In the featured singles match of the evening it was an all-American battle between Sarasota Open champion Tommy Paul and 2017 Tallahassee Tennis Challenger semi-finalist Mitchell Krueger. Krueger opened up the match with a early break, playing superb tennis and taking the first set 6-2. Paul waited until late in the second to make his move and close out the set 6-4. With everything on the line, Paul was able to outlast Krueger and battle his way to a 2-6, 6-4, 7-6(2) win.
