BUDAPEST, April 27, 2019
Two unseeded players will go head-to-head in Sunday’s singles final of the Hungarian Open. Qualifier Filip Krajinovic of Serbia will take on Italian young gun Matteo Berrettini for the title in Budapast.
Krajinovic defeated Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-2, 6-2. The 27-year-old Belgrade resident was in total control of the encounter, didn’t face a break point, converting four of his own eight chances to advance to his second tour-level final, having also made the championship match at the 2017 Rolex Paris Masters. The match lasted just under one hour of play.
“I didn’t expect this coming from quailes. Playing in a final, it’s a big achievement for me,” Krajinovic said, as quoted by the ATP Tour website. “I think I played really well today. I served really well and I’m really happy. I will enjoy tomorrow.”
Later on Saturday, Berrettini knocked off Laslo Djere of Serbia, the last seeded player left in the singles main draw. The 23-year-old Italian saved the only break point he faced, capitalizing on three of his own opportunities to prevail after one hour and 19 minutes. Berrettini could clinch his second ATP Tour title following his triumph in Gstaad last year.
“It’s a fantastic feeling to reach the final. It was a short match, but it was also tough. I am also happy to win in two sets, because I twisted my ankle a bit yesterday and I still felt it on court today,” Berrettini said. “I am looking forward to another tough match against Filip, who gained a lot of confidence, coming from the qualifying.”
Berrettini and Krajinovic will meet for the first time.
