ESTORIL, May 5, 2019

Stefanos Tsitsipas and Pablo Cuevas will compete in Sunday’s singles final of the Millennium Estoril Open. No. 1 seed Tsitsipas rallied past the tournament’s No. 4 David Goffin from Belgium, winning 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

The 20-year-old from Greece won six points more than his opponent to prevail after two hours and 18 minutes.

“I fought very hard and gave my soul out on the court, which is the biggest pleasure in this sport,” Tsitsipas said. “I was saying to myself while returning that I needed to stay aggressive, I needed to press as much as I could because otherwise I had no other option. I could not win this match by playing defensive tennis. I had to turn the whole thing around and start playing aggressive, risking a little bit more and I think at the end it paid off.”

Later on Saturday, Cuevas held off the stunning run of Spanish qualifier Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, winning 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. The lucky loser from Uruguay broke the 19-year-old’s serve seven times to secure victory in one hour and 53 minutes.

“It’s a special week. I finished in Budapest last Friday, took a flight early Saturday, played [here] in the afternoon. I lost on Sunday [in qualies], but had a chance to get in as a lucky loser,” Cuevas said. “I’ve had a good experience, and I’m happy to be in the final.”

Cuevas, who clinched six titles on the ATP Tour, lost to Salvatore Caruso of Italy in the final round of the qualifying, but avenged that defeat in the first round of the main draw to reach his first final since 2017 Sao Paulo.

Tsitsipas won the only previous meeting with Cuevas at the European Open in Antwerp two years ago.
