Top seed Bjorn Fratangelo emergered victorious from the all-US-American-affair with Will Spencer, winning 6-2, 6-2. The world number 118 won 69% of his first service points and converted five of his 12 break points to prevail in one hour and 13 minutes. Fratangelo will play with Mitchell Krueger another fellow countryman in the second round. The 21-year-old from Boca Raton beat Tennys Sandgren 7-5, 6-1 in 72 minutes.
Fifth seed Ryan Harrisson, who was granted a wild card, celebrated his first main draw victory since the ATP Challenger in Winnetka at the beginning of July, where he eventually reached the semi-finals. The 23-year-old US-American cruised past Facundo Mena, winning 6-1, 6-1 in only 47 minutes. Harrisson saved the only two break points he faced and converted three of his own to set a second round meeting with Takanyi Garanganga, who beat Ronnie Schneider 6-2, 6-1 in 65 minutes.
The tournament’s number three John-Patrick Smith defeated Nicholas Horton in an all-Australian-encounter, winning 6-2, 6-3. The world number 111 from Townsville hit five aces and saved the only break point he faced to prevail in one hour and 15 minutes. Smith will take on Peter Polansky next. The 27-year-old Canadian, who started his comeback a month ago, after he had been sidelined from the court for about one year due to injury, overcame Alessandro Bega through a 7-6, 6-7, 6-3 victory in two hours and 36 minutes.
Third seed Blaz Rola advanced to the second round, winning 6-4, 6-4 against Marcelo Arevalo. The 24-year-old Slovenian fired five aces and won 76% of his first service points to meet the winner of the match between Daniel Cox and Canadian wild card Brayden Schnur.
