In the first of two second round matches scheduled on Wednesday at the Pekao Szczecin Open, top-seed Pablo Carreῆo-Busta advanced to the quarterfinals, winning 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 against only 18-year-old Polish wild card Hubert Hurkacz. The world number 60 from Spain rallied back from a set down as well as being 1-3 down in the final set. In the following, Carreῆo-Busta won five games in a row to close the encounter after one hour and 44 minutes.
The 24-year-old Spaniard will take on the tournament’s number seven Jan-Lennard Struff. The world number 148 from Germany defeated Grzegorz Panfil in straight sets 6-3, 7-6 in one hour and 17 minutes without facing a break point.
Second seed Robin Haase opened his Szczecin campaign with a solid 6-1, 6-2 victory over Kamil Majchrzak. The world number 71 from the Netherlands fired eight aces and converted five of his 12 break point chances to seal victory in only 57 minutes to take on Ukrainian qualifier Artem Smirnov next.
The two finalists of last week’s ATP Challenger in Genova also made it to the second round. Fourth seed Marco Cecchinato defeated Mateusz Kowalczyk, winning 6-3, 6-4 when he saved all of the five break points he faced. The match lasted 64 minutes.
Sixth favourite Nicolas Almagro, who captured the title in Genova only two days ago, emerged victorious a third time in their third tour meeting with Andrey Golubev, winning 7-6, 6-1. The 30-year-old Spaniard capitalized on two of his three break points to finish the match in 70 minutes.
Almagro set a second round clash with Filippo Volandri, who advanced with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Marcin Gawron. The Italian veteran won 63% of his first service points and converted six of his 15 break point opportunities to prevail in one hour and 49 minutes.
