Over the last 12 months, Roger Federer has earned over $106 million, making him the world’s highest-paid athlete. Federer is the first tennis player to ever claim the top spot in the world since 1990. However, the Swiss maestro was joined by five others in the Forbe’s list of 100 highest-paid athletes. 

For those at the top, tennis has proven to be a lucrative sport. Most world-class tournaments have millions of dollars in prize money, in addition to several sponsors and endorsements. The sports also boasts of several top-earning female athletes, with two of them included in the Forbes list of 100 highest-paid athletes. Here are all the six tennis players that were featured on the Forbes list of highest-paid athletes.

Roger Federer

Over the last year, Roger Federer has received over $100 million in endorsements, and several more millions in prize money. That allowed him to rank ahead of Christiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in the Forbes list of highest-grossing athletes in 2020. 

Novak Djokovic

Though Novak Djokovic might give Federer a hard time on the tennis court, there’s clearly a huge difference in their annual income. Djokovic ranks at 23rd on the Forbes list of highest-paid athletes, reporting an annual income of about $44.6 million. The tennis master earned $32.6 million in endorsements, with 12 million coming from his tournament participation and wins.

Rafael Nadal

Four positions down, Rafael Nadal, takes the 27th position after claiming $40 million from his activities over the last 12 months. The 19-time grand slam winner put $26 million to his name through endorsements, while the remaining 14 million came from tournaments.

Naomi Osaka

Naomi Osaka ranked only two positions behind Nadal, sitting in the 29th position. Osaka isn’t far behind Nadal in terms of earnings, either. The Japanese star earned $37.4 million, with only $3.4 million coming from tournaments while the rest $34 million came from her endorsements.

Serena Williams

Serena William is one of the highest-earning tennis players of all time. This year, Serena claimed the 33rd position on the Forbes list after bagging a total of $36 million. Four million of that cash came from tournaments, while $32 million was earned through endorsements. 

Kei Nishikori

Further down on the list, Kei Nishikori came 40th after managing to take home $32.1 million. However, only $1.1 million of that money came from tournaments. As such, his total endorsements totaled $31 million.
