“My opponent started off strong,” Sonego said. “It was difficult to adapt to his game but I managed to do better the longer the match lasted. I showed the right attitude and in the end, I did it. It has been two fantastic weeks that have confirmed the quality of the work of the last training period. I brought out the best in me and now I am confident for the rest of the season.”

Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova took the women’s title. The World No. 117 battled past 27-year-old Italian Stefania Rubini 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(6) in the final.

“I won a really difficult final, full of ups and downs especially in my own game, but I stayed focused and played a good level of tennis,” Samonova was pleased with her performance.

Professional tennis will return to Umbria soon, as the city of Todi will host one of the first tournaments at the re-start of the ATP Challenger Tour next month.
