San Marino Returns To ATP Challenger Calendar

San Marino ATP Challenger

SAN MARINO, June 21, 2021

The Republic of San Marino is back on the ATP Challenger Tour calendar. For the first time since 2014, the microstate in Southern Europe, enclaved by Italy, will host a clay-court tournament. The ATP Challenger 90 event is scheduled for the week of August 9.

The first San Marino tennis event took place at the Centro Tennis Cassa di Risparmio di Fonte dell’Ovo in 1988 and was part of the ATP Tour from 1989 to 2000. From 2001 to 2014, the country hosted ATP Challengers. In 2013, the tournament received the “World’s Best Challenger Award” by the ATP.

A couple of clay-court tennis legends such as Thomas Muster (1993, 1995), Albert Costa (1996), Felix Mantilla (1997) and Guillermo Perez Roldan (1990, 1991) lifted the trophy in San Marino. Adrian Ungur was the last champion in 2014.
