Brazilian Igor Marcondes continued his great run of form this week at the Dove Men & Care – La Legión Florianopolis by reaching his first final on the ATP Challenger Tour. The World No. 524, who battled his way through the qualifying of the $52,080 clay-court tournament, fought past No. 4 seed Juan Ignacio Londero of Argentina 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-4 at the Lagoa Iate Clube in Florianopolis on Saturday.
Marcondes sent down five aces and won 66 per cent of his first-service points to prevail after two hours and 24 minutes.
“It was a very tough match, physically and mentally. Londero is a very aggressive player. The main point was the intensity I showed right from the beginning, even when I was a break down, and also the crowd, which helped me a lot from start to finish,” Marcondes said.
The leftie from Itajaí will face second seed Hugo Dellien in Sunday’s championship match. The World No. 119 also had to go the distance against Argentine Genaro Alberto Oliveiri. Dellien won six points less than his opponent but secured a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 victory in two hours and 13 minutes.
Dellien is bidding for his eighth Challenger career crown, his third of the season following his triumphs on South American soil in Montevideo and Lima. Marcondes could lift his maiden trophy on the Pro Circuit. The pair will meet for the first time.
Barrientos/Gomez earn back-to-back titles in Brazil
In other action, Nicolas Barrientos and Alejandro Gomez captured the doubles title. The No. 4 seeds of Colombia defeated second favourites Martin Cuevas from Uruguay and Brazilian Rafael Matos 6-3, 6-3. The encounter lasted one hour and five minutes.
By winning their second Challenger team title following their triumph in Sao Paulo last week, Barrientos and Gomez split $3,100 in prize money and pocketed 80 ATP Doubles Ranking points.
