World No. 165 Gregoire Barrere emerged victorious from Wednesday’s all-French second-round encounter over Pierre-Hugues Herbert at the Teréga Open Pau-Pyrénées. Barrere knocked out the No. 4 seed of the €90,280 ATP Challenger 100 tournament 6-7(9), 6-3, 7-5.
The 28-year-old withstood 11 aces and broke his rival’s serve four times to succeed after two hours and 29 minutes. Barrere, who is seeking his fourth ATP Challenger career title and first since 2019 this week, will next play either No. 7 seed Quentin Halys of France or Croatian Nino Serdarusic.
Safiullin receives walkover from Pouille
Roman Safiullin of Russia also reached the quarterfinals in Pau after home favourite Lucas Pouille, who celebrated his 28th birthday, was forced to withdraw from the match with a right leg injury.
“On Monday, I felt some muscle pain in the left adductor. When it was warm, it was fine but the next day it was painful, so I didn’t play all day,” Pouille told the crowd on Centre Court of the Palais des Sports de Pau. “This morning when I woke up I felt an improvement but a medical check revealed a little something, nothing serious, but which could get worse.
“I am disappointed for the spectators, the tournament and Jérémy (Chardy). I loved the atmosphere on Monday night, I couldn’t wait to get back on the court. Well, I hope to be back next year.”
Safiullin will next take on the winner of the encounter between Constant Lestienne of France and Latvia’s Ernests Gulbis.
