ZADAR/STARNBERG, March 27, 2022
Italian teenager Flavio Cobolli has clinched his first title on the ATP Challenger Tour by winning the second edition of the Falkensteiner Punta Skala – Zadar Open. The 19-year-old Florence native defeated Polish qualifier and first-time finalist Daniel Michalski 6-4, 6-2 in the championship match.
On a sunny Sunday afternoon at the Tenis Klub Borik, the No. 6 seed of the €45,730 clay-court event sent down three aces and won 81 per cent of his first-service points. Cobolli, who competed in his third final at Challenger level after his home events in Rome and Barletta last season, capitalized on six of his 13 break-point chances to seal victory in one hour and 27 minutes.
The World No. 165 captured his first pro title on the ITF World Tennis Tour on clay in Antalya, Turkey in April last year and now lifted his maiden Challenger trophy. Cobolli, winner of the 2020 French Open boys’ doubles title alongside Swiss youngster Dominic Stricker, earned in Croatia €6,190 in prize money as well as 80 ATP Ranking points. He will crack the Top 150 for the first time when the new ATP Rankings will be released.
