Halys Hoists Lille Challenger Trophy

Quentin Halys has clinched his second ATP Challenger Tour title of the season, winning the fourth edition of the Play In Challenger Lille. The €67,960 indoor hard-court tournament was held at the Tennis Club Lillois Lille Metropole, the oldest and most significant tennis club in Lille, France.

Halys emerged victorious from the singles final between the top two seeds, rallying past No. 1 seed Ricardas Berankis from Lithuania 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-4 on Sunday afternoon. The World No. 115 fired 20 aces and won 82 per cent of his first-service points after two hours and 26 minutes.

Halys battled his way to the championship match with wins over Mirza Basic from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Vitaliy Sachko from Ukraine, Belgian Zizou Bergs as well as compatriot and No. 8 seed Constant Lestienne. By claiming his fifth ATP Challenger career title, his second of 2022 following his triumph on home soil in Pau last month, the 25-year-old from Bondy earned €9,200 in prize money as well as 90 ATP Ranking points.

“I would like to thank the public, I was extremely tired in the second set, but you pushed me a lot. This feels really good,” Halys told the spectators in his post-match interview.

Berankis was bidding for his 14th ATP Challenger career title, his first since the Odlum Brown VanOpen in Vancouver, Canada in August 2019. The 31-year-old Vilnius native pocketed €5,400 and 55 ATP Ranking points.

Durasovic/Niklas-Salminen triumph in doubles

On Saturday, Viktor Durasovic of Norway and Patrik Niklas-Salminen from Finland captured the doubles title. The tandem defeated the all-French combination of Jonathan Eysseric and Quentin Halys 7-5, 7-6(1). The encounter lasted one hour and 15 minutes.

By winning their first team title, Durasovic and Niklas-Salminen split €3,950 and earned 90 ATP Doubles Ranking points.
