HAMBURG, June 2, 2022

They have cult status and are German tennis heroes, and they are set to appear in Hamburg. The so-called “KraMies” – Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies – have signed up for the 2022 Hamburg European Open. Germany’s top men’s doubles pairing, which sensationally won the 2019 French Open title and then again in 2020, still lack the Rothenbaum trophy in their collection.

“We’re really looking forward to be back playing in Hamburg this year. The tournament in the city is just awesome,” says Andreas Mies. “Tournaments in Germany are special for us and we simply love playing in front of a home crowd. I’m sure we’ll all be enjoying tennis to the full again.”

Krawietz/Mies would be the first all-German men’s doubles team to win the German clay court classic since Jürgen Faßbender/Hans-Jürgen Pohmann back in 1974.

Krawietz/Mies reached the quarterfinals in Hamburg in both 2019 and 2020. Last year however, the 30-year-old Krawietz contested the tournament in the Hanseatic city without his fellow German as the 31-year-old Mies was forced to undergo knee surgery. They nevertheless were able to enjoy a ceremonious moment on Hamburg’s Center Court as they were honoured belatedly after being voted second in Germany’s Team of the Year award in 2020. For Krawietz, Hamburg last year was also a good place to be from a tennis point of view. Playing alongside the Romanian Horia Tecau, he reached the final but was defeated by Tim Pütz (Germany) and Michael Venus (New Zealand). After Mies’ recovery, the KraMies combo has been reunited since the start of the year and have already won two titles this season in Barcelona and Munich. They are the first ever German doubles to triumph in Barcelona. They are also the first all-German duo to have won a Grand Slam and an ATP 500 event. The downer in their comeback year was the recent first round loss at their favourite tournament in Stade Roland Garros. Krawietz/Mies are currently lying tenth in the Pepperstone ATP Doubles Race. Tickets for the Hamburg European Open 2022 are available via the online ticket store on the tournament homepage.

Grand Elysée to remain the players’ hotel – partnership with Block Gruppe expanded

Located on the Rothenbaumchaussee, it is only 1.3 kilometres from the tournament venue and is one of Hamburg’s most renowned hotels – the five-star Grand Elysée Hamburg will remain the Hamburg European Open players’ hotel. The long-standing partnership with the Hamburg-based Block Gruppe to which the Grand Elysée Hamburg belongs, has been expanded as Blockbräu will now be the official beer partner. Jim Block is represented with a burger stall in the Public Village.

“I’m delighted that our collaboration with the Block Gruppe, which is just as deeply-rooted in Hamburg as our tournament, is continuing to grow,” stressed Tournament Director Sandra Reichel. Talking about the Grand Elysée Hamburg players’ hotel, she said, “The Grand Elysée is one of the nicest premium quality hotels in Hamburg. The feedback we get from the tennis pros is phenomenal. The Grand Elysée has the size and outstanding professionalism necessary to stage a combined event. Its location is also perfect as the players can be shuttled to and from the venue in only five minutes. Many also love being able to pop out for a walk around the Außenalster lake.“

“The Hamburg European Open brings top class international tennis to the Rothenbaum. It’s a long-established tournament and a real highlight every year for Hamburg’s residents and visitors. We at the Grand Elysée Hamburg are very grateful for the excellent partnership. For us, it’s an honour to accommodate the outstanding athletes,” says André Vedovelli, the Grand Elysée Hamburg CEO. The Elysée and the Hamburg European Open will this year also offer joint hotel-ticket packages: a night in a Grand Classic double room for two guests including breakfast, free use of the Elyseum Wellness & Spa, complimentary parking and a category 1 ticket per person for the Hamburg European Open is available from 260.00 euro. The special offers can be booked on the tournament website. In the coming week, the Hamburg European Open’s social media channels will run a draw where the main prize is an overnight stay for two persons in the Grand Elysée Hamburg.
