Two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray picked up his second win of this year’s LTA Surbiton Trophy with a close-fought 7-6(4,) 7-6(3) win over Dutch qualifier Gijs Brouwer which featured one break of serve apiece.

On Thursday, Murray, top seed of the ATP Challenger 125 grass-court event, outpointed his rival 89-76 after one hour and 50 minutes.

Murray will be joined in the quarterfinals by fellow Briton Ryan Peniston. The 26-year-old wild card entry from Essex proved too strong for his compatriot Jack Draper in a compelling 6-7(9), 7-5, 6-4 win that enthralled the Surbiton crowd for three hours and three minutes.

“It was a tough battle from the start to the finish. Yeah, it was a shame that Jack got some cramps in the end but I thought the level was really good and he was fighting all the way and it was a good battle,” said Peniston and will next play Finnish qualifier Otto Virtanen, who rallied past local wild card Paul Jubb 2-6, 7-5, 6-3. The encounter lasted one hour and 39 minutes.

In the remaining two quarterfinal matches Australian qualifier Max Purcell will face No. 7 seed Denis Kudla from the United States and eighth seed Jordan Thompson will oppose fellow Aussie Christopher O’Connell.
