World No. 78 Quentin Halys leads the semi-finals line-up of the Wolffkran Open. The top seed of the €45,730 ATP Challenger Tour event in Ismaning fought past Briton Alastair Gray 6-4, 6-7(3), 7-6(4) in the stage of the last eight on Friday.
Halys, who is bidding for his sixth Challenger career crown this week at the International German Indoor Championships, fired 25 aces and won 85 per cent of his first-service points to prevail after two hours and nine minutes.
“I love to play on fast courts, that’s why I decided to come here,” said Halys, who is competing in the Bavarian tournament for the fifth time.
The 25-year-old Frenchman will next take on Polish qualifier Kacper Zuk, who continued his fine run of form with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Denis Yevseyev of Kazakhstan in one hour and 36 minutes.
Rehberg delights home crowd
In the bottom half of the draw, Max Rehberg remains unstoppable on the carpet. The 19-year-old local wild card entry, who captured his maiden title on the Pro Circuit on the same surface in Forbach, France two weeks ago, edged past German qualifier Elmar Ejupovic 7-6(8), 7-6(4). Rehberg outpointed his compatriot 84-80 in one hour and 54 minutes.
“Elmar served a bit better today than my opponents in the two previous matches because I could hardly read his serves,” said Rehberg. “The match was incredibly close and it could have ended in straight sets for him. But somehow I managed to do it again and of course I’m super happy about the win.”
The World No. 596 will next challenge third-seeded Canadian Vasek Pospisil, who benefited from the retirement of Vitaliy Sachko. The Ukrainian alternate was forced to stop playing at 6-3, 1-0 for Pospisil due to illness.
