USTA Press Release, December 2, 2022

Top young juniors Hank Trondson (18; Nashville, Tenn.) and Maddy Zampardo (18; Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) each won singles titles at the USTA Boys’ and Girls’ 18s National Indoor Championships.

The USTA National Indoor Championships, one of five junior USTA National Championship events in 2022, were held last week at eight locations across the country with singles and doubles competition across the 18s, 16s, 14s and 12s age groups.

Trondson, the tournament’s No. 14 seed, defeated unseeded Emon van Loben Sels (Sacramento, Calif.), 6-4, 6-3 in the final. A Tennessee state champion at the Ensworth School in Nashville, Trondson will play college tennis next year at Oklahoma. Trondson knocked off two top-10 seeds en route to the final, one of which was Alex Fuchs (Los Altos, Calif.), who teamed up in van Loben Sels to win the boys’ 18s doubles title. The pair defeated the second-seeded duo of Caden Hasler (Pleasant Grove, Utah) and Dylan Tsoi (El Dorado Hills, Calif.), 8-3 in the final.

Zampardo, the No. 6 seed, upset the No. 1 overall seed Valerie Glozman (Bellevue, Wash.), 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 in the final. Glozman notably finished runner-up at the USTA Girls’ 18s National Championships this summer and competed in the US Open Qualifying Tournament. Zampardo is a high school senior at the University Liggett School in suburban Detroit and is committed to play college tennis at N.C. State. She recently reached the final of the ITF Pan American Championships in Nicholasville, Ky. Zampardo teamed up with Susanna Maltby (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) to sweep the girls’ 18s titles, defeating Erin Ha (Tenafly, N.J.) and Stephanie Yakoff (Fort Lee, N.J.), 8-5, in the doubles final.

No. 4 seed Dominick Mosejczuk (Queens, N.Y.) defeated No. 7 seed Ian Mayew (Cary, N.C.), 7-6(3), 6-3, to capture the boys’ 16s singles title. No. 9 seed Julia Werdiger (New York) prevailed in the girls’ 16s singles final, knocking off No. 10 seed Elena Daskalova (Olathe, Kan.), 6-3, 6-2.

The top seeds in 14s division both prevailed as Jack Secord (Lake Forest, Ill.) and Christina Lyutova (Newport Beach, Calif.) won the boys’ and girls’ singles titles, respectively.

Antanas Daugis (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Priscilla Sirichantho (Woodbridge, Conn.) rounded out the singles champions, winning the boys’ and girls’ 12s titles, respectively.

Each year, more than 120,000 players compete in USTA junior tournament. Players compete in levels of competition through earned advancement in the 10s, 12s, 14s, 16s and 18s age divisions. USTA junior tournaments help kids take their game as far as they want – high school, college or the pros – or just have fun competing.
