After a two-year hiatus, Orlando Luz from Rio Grande do Sul, has returned to the winners’ circle by lifting the trophy of the São Paulo Tennis Classic on Sunday. The 25-year-old Brazilian confirmed his status as the favorite throughout the week in Mogi das Cruzes and earned the title of the ITF World Tennis Tour M15 clay-court event hosted by the Kosmos Clube and organized by Instituto Sports. It marked Luz’s first triumph on Brazilian soil.

After an impeccable victory over João Fonseca on Saturday, the World No. 465 needed to recover from a bad start to beat Uruguayan Franco Roncadelli  2-6, 6-0, 6-1 in the singles final in one hour and 41 minutes.

“This tournament means a lot to me, because at first I had planned to play in Buenos Aires. But having a tournament here, like the one in Mogi, helps us Brazilians, who don’t have to spend much and be close to our fans, our family,” said Luz, who captured his ninth career title on the Pro Circuit, his first since winning in Antalya, Turkey, in May 2021.

“We know how rare it is to have events in Brazil. And the crowd’s energy today was incredible, as a matter of fact, I felt a lot of the support from the fans throughout the week and it brings me confidence for the rest of the season.”
