“It’s hard to describe,” said Djokovic. “I’m just so proud to be a part of an elite number of athletes that managed to win gold for their countries in their respective sports. They probably are the only ones that can really understand this feeling. I was so blessed to win everything pretty much there is to win in my sport, but this is something different. This supersedes everything that I’ve ever felt on the tennis court after winning big trophies. It’s just incredible joy.”
Alcaraz stated: “It was emotional. It wasn’t the result that I wanted, but I have to be really proud of myself for the level that I played during the whole tournament, and for the level that I played today. I had a really difficult and tough opponent in Novak. He played an unbelievable game, from the first ball and to the last one, so I have to give credit to him. It means a lot to bring a medal to Spain. To have a medal is an incredible feeling that I have to enjoy. I just need to realise that not every day I win a medal.”
Errani/Paolini triumph in women’s doubles
In the final match of the event, Italy’s Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini came from behind to defeat Mirra Andreeva and Diana Shnaider to win women’s doubles gold, with the result making Errani the second player of the day to complete a career ‘Golden Slam’, having also won the women’s doubles title at all four Grand Slam tournaments.
“It’s a dream come true. The Olympics was always so special for me. To have the gold medal is much better. I’m enjoying this moment.. I have to thank Jasmine for playing with me all year. It was amazing,” said Errani.
“It feels great to have this medal round the neck. It’s something different. I think you feel the importance because it’s every four years and you play for your country. Sara asked me to play doubles to qualify for the Olympics about a year ago. Now, to have the gold medal, it’s something I couldn’t even imagine,” added Paolini.
