ISMANING, November 8, 2024

Anna-Lena Friedsam headlined quarterfinals action at the THERME ERDING OPEN 2024 by Tannenhof hosted by the TC Ismaning.

The World No. 499, who was recently nominated by the German Tennis Federation (DTB) for the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Malaga, faced Barbora Palico from the Czech Republic.

The Czech eighth seed displayed high-paced, powerful baseline shots. Both players held serve early, but at 2-3, Friedsam faced two break points. She held firm, then secured the first break of the match and went on to serve out the set at 6-4 without dropping another point.

Friedsam built a quick 4-2 lead with chances to break again, but Palicova fought back, forcing a tie-break. In the tie-break, Friedsam relied on her experience, clinching the match 6-4, 7-6(4) with a stunning volley stop after 91 minutes.

“I played very good tennis today and served well from the beginning. Mentally, I was ready to handle her fast-paced shots,” Friedsam said. “On top of today’s win, I’m thrilled to have been nominated for the Billie Jean King Cup Finals by the DTB. I’ve already seen the beautiful winner’s trophy here, shaped like a palm tree, and I’d love to take it home as a souvenir for Malaga.”

Friedsam continues to aim for the title at ITF World Tennis Tour W75 tournament in Ismaning, facing No. 2 seed Daria Snigor next. The Ukrainian ended the run of 15-year-old German qualifier Marielle Thamm, winning 7-6(4), 6-2.

In the second semi-final Dalila Jakupovic of Slovenia will take on Susan Bandecchi from Switzerland.
