Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic have both withdrawn from the upcoming Mutua Madrid Open, dealing a major blow to the star power of the ATP Masters 1000 clay-court event.

Alcaraz confirmed his decision on Friday, opting not to compete in front of his home fans as he continues to manage physical issues following a demanding stretch on tour.

“There are some news that are incredibly hard to share. Madrid is home, one of the most special places on my calendar, and that’s why it hurts so much not to be able to play here for the second year in a row,” Alcaraz wrote on social media. “It hurts especially not to be in front of my people, in a tournament that means so much. Thank you for the unwavering affection, and I hope we see each other soon.”

Earlier in the day, tournament organizers also announced the withdrawal of Djokovic due to injury. The Serbian has not competed since his appearance at the BNP Paribas Open in March and had already skipped the Miami Open later that month with a right shoulder problem.

A three-time champion in Madrid, Djokovic last lifted the trophy in 2019 and has long been one of the standout performers at the Masters 1000 event. His absence, alongside Alcaraz’s, reshapes the tournament landscape and opens the door for other contenders on the road to Roland Garros.
