Second seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina was crowned Chengdu Open champion on his tournament debut after saving four set points in a dramatic second-set tie-break to defeat fifth seed Hubert Hurkacz 6-4, 7-6(7) in one hour and 46 minutes.

In the opening set, Davidovich Fokina saved the only break point he faced in the sixth game before securing the decisive break in the seventh, courtesy of an error from his Polish opponent.

After a tense second set, Hurkacz appeared poised to force a decider when he established a 6-3 lead in the tie-break. However, the World No. 28 produced a series of inspired winners to save four set points before reeling off the final three points to take it 9-7.

“Today was not an easy match. He served extremely well from the beginning, so I did not have many opportunities to break him. Maybe I got a little lucky in the first set,” said Davidovich Fokina. “I felt that I was more solid from the baseline and knew that would give me chances from the baseline. When I was 6-3 down in the tie-break, I think I played very well, and in the end it came down to very fine margins.”

The victory earned the 27-year-old his second career title and first on hard courts, three months after lifting his maiden trophy on the grass courts of Mallorca. Having lost his first five ATP Tour finals, Davidovich Fokina has now won his past two.

“My team and I have worked very hard on recovering from the injury to my lower back,” he added. “We made the difficult decision not to play at the US Open, and now I know that it was the right decision.”

Johnson/Zielinski triumph in doubles 

Luke Johnson and Jan Zielinski captured their first ATP Tour title together after defeating fourth seeds Robert Galloway and Andre Goransson 7-6(7), 7-5 in a tightly contested Chengdu Open doubles final lasting one hour and 31 minutes.

Neither pair surrendered serve in the opening set, although Galloway and Goransson were forced to save three set points while serving at 4-5. The American-Swedish duo then established a 5-2 advantage in the tie-break, but Johnson and Zielinski recovered and saved two set points before edging it 9-7.

The second set remained equally tight, with neither team earning a break point across the opening 10 games. Johnson and Zielinski then produced a decisive late surge, winning nine consecutive points to secure the only break of the match and complete the straight-sets victory.

“It was a really good match from all four players, and I thought everyone served very well,” said Johnson. “The tie-break was up and down, with both teams having set points, but we played our best return game at 5-5 in the second set to get the break. It was very good timing, and we’re really happy with the result.”

The triumph provided a memorable conclusion to a challenging season for the British-Polish pairing, who had already agreed to go their separate ways following Chengdu.

“We’ve had a lot of ups and downs this year. We were finally beginning to turn things around in the middle of the season when we both suffered injuries, and it has been a struggle,” said Zielinski. “In tennis, you receive another opportunity every week, so I’m very happy with this result and with how we ended the week.”

Johnson also extended his perfect record in ATP Tour finals to 4-0, while Zielinski ended a run of five consecutive defeats in championship matches.

“Before the match, we were joking that Jan had lost his past five finals, while I had never lost one, so one of those streaks had to end,” said Johnson. “Luckily, it was Jan’s!”

In an interesting turn of events, the new champions will find themselves on opposite sides of the net when they face each other in their very next match at the Japan Open.
