Canadian rising stars Félix Auger-Aliassime from Montreal and Denis Shapovalov from Richmond Hill made their muchanticipated debuts on Wednesday at the $25,000 Subaru Sherbrooke Futures presented by Énergie 106,1, held on the Christian Bourque indoor courts at the Centre récréatif de Rock Forest in Sherbrooke.

Auger-Aliassime was back on court after falling in the second round of the Gatineau Futures last week. For the occasion, he went up against US-American Nathaniel Lammons who got into the main draw as a lucky loser. On the strength of 9 aces and winning 85 percent of his first serve points, Auger-Aliassime came away with a 6-3, 6-3 victory. The 16-year-old will face US-American Winston Lin who upset eighth seed Raymond Sarmiento of the United States in the first round.

For his part, Shapovalov played Wednesday evening’s feature match and the champion in Gatineau was looking to keep his win streak alive. The tournament’s second seed won his sixth straight match 6-4, 6-3 over US-American JC Aragone in under an hour. Shapovalov will meet US-American Christian Harrison for a spot in the quarterfinals.

The tournament’s number three Gleb Sakharov from France, who finished runner-up in Gatineau last Sunday, defeated Tim Puetz of Germany 6-3, 6-2 in one hour and three minutes. Sakharov will next take on Swedish qualifier Isak Arvidsson.
