TASHKENT, October 14, 2017

Guillermo Garcia-López of Spain captured his second ATP Challenger title of the season, winning the 10th edition of the $150,000 Tashkent Challenger. The 34-year-old from Albacete beat Polish youngster Kamil Majchrzak in Sunday’s singles final 6-1, 7-6.

Garcia-López saved two of the four break points he faced, capitalizing on two of his own to seal victory in one hour and 32 minutes. The Spanish veteran, who won the tournament in Scheveningen earlier this year, hoisted the trophy without dropping a set all week.

“It’s double joy for me winning the title and moving back into the top 100,” a happy Garcia-López told afterwards. “It was a good match. Kamil played very well in the second set and put me under pressure, but I played well in the ninth game and used my backhand well. It’s great to end a good week with a title.

“I don’t have to defend any points for the next six months and only try to improve my game and also try to climb up the rankings.” 

Garcia-López reached a career high World No. 23 in 2011 and is projected to be back in the Top 85 on Monday. He takes away from Uzbekistan $21,600 in prize money as well as 125 ATP ranking points.

“I played well and had my chances,” Majchrzak told. “I need to play with great players like Guillermo and many more finals. I’m happy to have made points and to get into the Top 250.”
