SANTA PONSA, December 13, 2017
Tennis on grass in Mallorca? This vision became reality in June 2016 with the inaugural WTA Mallorca Open. Ice-tennis in Mallorca? A premiere and spectacular PR show was the starting signal on Thursday for the countdown to the third edition of the WTA International event, held at the Santa Ponsa Tennis Club from 17 to 24 June 2018.
Organizer Edwin Weindorfer, tournament director Toni Nadal as well as Spain’s Fed Cup captain Anabel Medina Garrigues have gathered in the “Palau Reial La Almudaina”, the headquarters of the “Consell de Mallorca”,- with and without skates to announce that Caroline Garcia of France will lead the line-up.
The Frenchwoman captured the title at the tournament’s inaugural edition in June 2016. Garcia enjoyed the most successful year in her tennis career in 2017, when she won her first career Premier 5 singles title at the Wuhan Open and lifted the trophy at the China Open. After the event, she moved into the top 10 for the first time in her career, also putting her on the eighth spot on the WTA Race to Singapore, where she advanced to the semi-finals. The 24-year-old right-hander finished the season being ranked World No. 8.
“We are very pleased that with Caroline Garcia one of the greatest personalities in women’s tennis will be our number one at the Mallorca Open 2018,” said Edwin Weindorfer.
