Taberner, Martínez Portero Dominate Spain’s National Championships

GRANADA, December 16, 2017

The singles finals of the MAPFRE Spanish National Tennis Championships are set. Youngsters Carlos Taberner and Pedro Martínez Portero advanced to Sunday’s men’s title match held at the Real Sociedad de Tenis de Granada.

Taberner upset second seed Guillermo Garcia-López 6-2, 6-3 on Saturday afternoon and Martínez Portero, who knocked out the tournament’s number one Roberto Carballés Baena in the quarterfinals, defeated Miguel Semmler 6-2, 6-3. The two 20-year-olds from Valencia met seven times on the tour with Martínez Portero leading 5-2 in head-to-head records. Taberner, however, won the last meeting at the ATP Challenger in Cortina d’Ampezzo this year.

Doubles Champions

Later in the day, the two teamed up to clinch the doubles title. Martínez Portero and Taberner beat Alberto Romero and Miguel Semmler 6-1, 6-2.

In the women’s competition, Paula Badosa knocked out defending champion Lara Arruabarrena 7-6, 1-6, 6-3 to face Carla Suárez Navarro in the final. The World No. 40 benefited from the retirement of Sara Sorribes leading 7-5, 4-3. Suárez Navarro seeks her third national crown after winning in 2008 and 2011.
