Chung, Monfils To Play MercedesCup In Stuttgart

STUTTGART, February 8, 2018

Reigning #NextGenATP champion Hyeon Chung and Frenchman Gael Monfils will join the line-up at this year’s MercedesCup, held at the TC Weissenhof from 9 to 17 June 2018. This was annnounced by the organizers of the ATP 250 grass court event on Thursday afternoon.

At this year’s Australian Open, Chung became the first South Korean player to advance past the fourth round of a Grand Slam. He defeated Mischa Zverev and Daniil Medvedev to reach the third round. There he achieved his first victory over a top 10- player by defeating World No. 4 Alexander Zverev in five sets. In the fourth round Chung defeated six-time Australian Open champion and former World No. 1 Novak Djokovic, who had just returned from injury, in straight sets.

In the stage of the final eight, Chung defeated unseeded US-American Tennys Sandgren in straight sets to reach his first Grand Slam semifinal, where he played Roger Federer but was forced to withdraw due to foot blisters when he was a set and 2-5 down. The 21-year-old will make his debut in Stuttgart.

Monfils will return to the venue of the TC Weissenhof for the seventh time, for the first time since 2015. Back then, he advanced to the semi-finals losing to Rafael Nadal in straight sets. Five years earlier, he finished runner-up to Albert Montanes, when the tournament was still held on clay. Monfils was forced to retire in the final due to injury.

Chung and Monfils will join Nick Kyrgios of Australia and Grigor Dimitrov from Bulgaria, who had already announced to compete in Stuttgart.
