The 2019 Mutua Madrid Open came to a close on Sunday with World No. 1 Novak Djokovic reaching the top of the ATP Masters 1000 title leaders list alongside Rafael Nadal. The 31-year-old from Serbia defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece 6-3, 6-4 in the singles final to lift his 33rd Masters trophy.
Djokovic won 78 per cent of his first service points, didn’t face a break point and capitalized on two of his own five chances to prevail after one hour and 32 minutes.

“These are the best tournaments, biggest tournaments we have in our sport, in the ATP, of course alongside the Grand Slams,” Djokovic said during his post-match interview on court. “This is as important and as good as it gets.”
By lifting his third trophy at the Caja Mágica, the top seed earned €1,202,520 in prize money as well as 1,000 ATP-Ranking points. Djokovic, whose last title was his 15th Grand Slam victory at the Australian Open in January, will now head to the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome, where he is a four-time champion.
“I’m very pleased. I was saying after yesterday’s semi-final win that it was a very, very important win for me for my confidence. I wasn’t playing my best tennis after Australia so I was looking to regain the momentum this week. I started off well. I didn’t drop a set the entire tournament, so I’m very pleased. I played some of my best tennis here,” Djokovic said.
Rojer/Tecau win second title in Madrid
Earlier in the day, Jean-Julien Rojer from the Netherlands and Horia Tecau of Romania clinched the doubles title. The pair beat singles stars Diego Schwartzman of Argentina and Austria’s Dominic Thiem 6-2, 6-3. The encounter lasted one hour and 11 minutes.
“It’s a great feeling to win another title here. We prepared well this week. We felt like we had a good level of tennis but of course when you start playing the matches, that’s the real test,” Tecau said, as quoted on the ATP Tour website. “We had a big test in the first round against the Bryan Brothers, who are always a tough team to compete against. We managed to save two match points and go through to the next round and that gave us a lot of confidence that we kept riding with.”
Rojer added: “As the world knows, they’re amazing players. For us it’s such a treat when we get to play against top players in the world like that. It doesn’t happen often, so we really enjoyed it.”
