Professional tennis has returned to Italy, as Lorenzo Sonego clinched the title of the Campionati Italiani Assoluti 2020 held at the Tennis Club 1971 in Todi.

The World No. 46 and top seed of the clay-court tournament defeated No. 7 seed Andrea Arnaboldi 6-4, 6-3 in Sunday’s final. Sonego won 54 per cent of his first-service points and secured victory in one hour and 46 minutes.

“I played a great match today. Arna is a tough player, but I managed to be aggressive and capitalized on my chances,” Sonego said after the match. Exactly one year ago, it was June 29, 2019, the 25-year-old from Turin celebrated his maiden title on the ATP Tour by winning the Antalya Open in Turkey.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the ongoing suspension of the professional tennis tours, the tournament in Todi, organized by MEF Tennis Events, has been Italy’s first National Tennis Championships since 2004. Sixteen years ago Massimo Dell’Acqua lifted the trophy.

The second leg of the two-week MEF Tennis Tour will be held in Perugia, kicking off on Monday.
