WASHINGTON, July 29, 2020 (by Michael Dickens)
Two-time Grand Slam champion Angelique Kerber announced Tuesday she has reunited with coach Torben Beltz after splitting with him in 2017. The two have some history together as this will be the third time Kerber has been coached by Beltz. First, she worked with him from 2004-13, then from 2014-17.
It was during Kerber’s second stint with Beltz that she achieved a No. 1 ranking on September 12, 2016 after winning the 2016 US Open. During 2016, Kerber became the fourth player in the Open Era to reach three Grand Slam finals in the same year they reached their first.

In a statement from Kerber’s team, it said: “The new coach is an old acquaintance, Torben Beltz, who was with Angelique Kerber in 2016 as she won two Grand Slams and was the year-end No. 1 in the world rankings, thus far the most successful year of her career.”
The 21st-ranked Kerber, now 32, has played in just three tournaments this year, compiling a 4-3 win-loss record. She began 2020 losing two of her first three matches, in Brisbane and Adelaide. Then, she advanced to the fourth round of the Australian Open before losing to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
Beltz most recently worked with Donna Vekic of Croatia and helped guide her to a No. 19 year-end ranking last year.
