SAVANNAH/STARNBERG, April 28, 2022

Second-round action at the Savannah Challenger got underway on Wednesday with Bjorn Fratangelo, Alex Rybakov, Jose Pereira and Tomas Martin Etcheverry advancing to the quarterfinals.

In the first match of the day, US-American Rybakov and Jason Jung of Chinese Taipei squared off for the first time in their careers. After dropping serve early in the first, Rybakov was able to bounce back, breaking Jung twice and taking the opening set 7-5. In the second, the two stayed on serve until the very end, with Rybakov grabbing the break and closing out the match with a final score of 7-5, 6-4.

Meanwhile on the Landings Company Court, 2016 Savannah Challenger champion Fratangelo returned to the clay courts of Skidaway Island for the first time since his title run. The No. 8 seed from the United States scored a routine win over Gijs Brouwer, defeating the Dutchman 7-6(5), 6-3.

Later in the afternoon, US-American wild card Oliver Crawford took on Jose Pereira. The Brazilian qualifier capitalized on a strong service set, making 84 per cent of his first serves and taking the opener 6-4. In the second set, he carried his momentum to a 6-4, 6-3, reaching his second ATP Challenger quarterfinal of the year.

In the featured evening match, top seed Etcheverry of Argentina hit the court against 17-year-old Arthur Fils. The French teenager raced through the first set, taking the opener 6-1. Etcheverry dug deep to take the second set 6-3 and level up the match. It would ultimately be the top seed who would advance after Fils was forced to retire with an injury at 0-3 in the third.

Second-round action continues Thursday at 11:00 am local time with Jack Sock against Sumit Nagal highlighting the day. In the evening, Tell Scarlet, the Savannah based pop band and local favorite, will be entertain guests with hits from yesterday and today during the Center Court Concert. Tickets are available for $35 and complimentary member passes for Court 6 and 16 are available for Landings Club members.
