STARNBERG, June 3, 2022 (Guest Post)
As the French Open gets closer to the finals, viewers will be transfixed by the action from Roland Garros until all the champions are crowned. With US gambling laws changing over the past few years, many fans will have been working out how to bet on tennis online – and possibly put that knowledge to good use earlier in the year for the Australian Open.
Checking out recent results is always a good idea before a big tournament, so there will be a lot of information to be taken from what unfolds at the French Open. That will then be used when picking winners for Wimbledon and the US Open later in the year. But who looks good for the remaining two majors in 2022?
Men’s Wimbledon
After eventually missing out on a chance of winning the Australian Open, world number one Novak Djokovic was able to compete at Roland Garros and will have a similar opportunity at Wimbledon thanks to their COVID vaccination rules. The Serb will be the favorite to win his seventh All England title.
With no tournament held in 2020 because of the pandemic, Djokovic will looking to win a fourth straight title. But he will have some competition from some younger players such as Carlos Alcaraz. The Spaniard has impressed recently and could do well at Wimbledon.
Women’s Wimbledon
With the current women’s champion, Ashleigh Barty, retiring earlier this year, Iga Swiatek is regarded as the favorite. She was the number one seed at the French Open and could continue what has started to look like a prolonged period at the top of the women’s game.
Emma Radacanu will be cheered on by the Wimbledon fans eager to support a potential British champion. She surprisingly crashed out of the French Open in the second round but will be hoping to do better later in the summer. Naomi Osaka and Simona Halep are others to look out for here.
Men’s US Open
Novak Djokovic will be favorite to win the US Open as well this year, once again. If he is on top form it is unlikely that anyone will be able to match his sheer power. But old adversary Rafa Nadal will be better suited to the hard courts of Flushing Meadows than the grass of Wimbledon – and could be in with a chance.
Djokovic also may have Daniil Medvedev to contend with as well. All Russian players were prohibited from playing at Wimbledon, due to the conflict in Ukraine. But there has not been any decision made yet as far as the US Open goes, so he will be hoping he will be able to compete in New York.
Women’s US Open
The same names will be fancied at the US Open as at Wimbledon, with Iga Swiatek the big favorite to go much further than her previous best of the fourth round in this competition. Osaka and Radacanu may also be able to challenge the Polish player for the title here.
Aryna Sabalenka will be hoping that she gets the opportunity to compete as well. She will miss out on Wimbledon for the same reason as Medvedev in the men’s singles. She was beaten by the unseeded Kaia Kanepi at the Australian Open but has been in limbo ever since because of the situation in Ukraine.
2022 Champions
Predicting the winners of the four tennis majors is more difficult than usual in 2022 thanks to COVID rulings and some players being denied entry because of the actions of their countries. The absence of some of the top seeds does give others a chance of glory though.
With young, exciting players coming through in both the men’s and women’s games, 2022 could be the perfect opportunity for some of the relative newcomers to make a name for themselves.
