NOTTINGHAM/STARNBERG, June 13, 2022

Beatriz Haddad Maia from Brazil won her maiden WTA Tour title at the Rothesay Open Nottingham as she conquered grass-court specialist Alison Riske of the United States 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 in two hours and 18 minutes in Sunday’s singles final.

The 26-year-old Brazilian has won 15 of her last 17 matches and will provisionally rise to a new career-high ranking of World No. 32 – marking a rise of 186 places since this time last year.  

“I feel great, it’s been an amazing week. I couldn’t have expected a better start to the grass season,” Haddad Maia said. “I never would’ve thought my first title would be on grass and I think because of that I didn’t create any expectation for this week. The last two years I’ve been pushing myself with my team and I think that’s why I won. I never expected the support that I had today. Nottingham will for sure be in my heart.” 

Haddad Maia became the first Brazilian female to win a singles title in Britain in 58 years and was presented with the Elena Baltacha Trophy by 2021 Nottingham champion, now retired former British No. 1 Johanna Konta. 

Later in the day, Haddad Maia and Zhang Shuai from China claimed the doubles title in straight sets after beating US-American Caroline Dolehide and Monica Niculescu of Romania 7-6(2), 6-3. Haddad Maia joins an illustrious list that includes Billie Jean King and Ashleigh Barty as winners of the singles and doubles titles in Nottingham.
