MALAGA/STARNBERG, November 16, 2024

Poland overcame host nation Spain at the Billie Jean King Cup by Gainbridge Finals in Malaga on Friday thanks to three-set victories for Magda Linette and Iga Swiatek against Sara Sorribes Tormo and Paula Badosa, respectively. The Poles advance to a quarterfinal clash with Czechia on Saturday.

I feel I want to be happy and want to cry at the same time,” Linette said. “Really proud, because it was really tough circumstances. I never beaten her. Felt responsibility and felt I have to deliver, and I really gave everything I had today against one of the toughest opponents against me.”

In the evening session, Great Britain eased past Germany following victories for Emma Raducanu and Katie Boulter, and will face defending champions Canada in a last 8 tie on Sunday.

“I think it’s a great way to come back, even though there is some pressure, to score a point for your team,” said Boulter, who beat Laura Siegemund in straight sets.

“You know, you’re not just playing for yourself; you’re playing for everyone. I think as an individual athlete, it’s not like a tour event. So I think having your team members on the side cheering you on when you might be a little bit nervous, and having the ability to use on-court coaching and getting feedback is very helpful when you haven’t played for a long time.”
