World No. 10 Mirra Andreeva has quietly but effectively gone about her business this week at the WTA 500 Upper Austria Ladies Linz on red clay. She almost feels like she’s at home in Austria because she’s undefeated in three matches.

On Saturday afternoon, the top-seeded Russian advanced to the sixth tour-level singles final of her career – and second of the year after her title run at Adelaide in January – by ending the surprising run of Elena-Gabriela Ruse of Romania.

In the first semifinal, the 18-year-old won her 17th match of the season with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over the 87th-ranked Ruse in 91 minutes on Center Court inside Design Center Linz.  It was her eighth victory in eight tries against opponents ranked outside the Top 50 and she’s the first Top-10 player to reach the Linz final since No. 10 Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia won the 2016 Linz title.

Andreeva won 66 percent (23 of 35) of her first-serve points, which bettered Ruse’s 50 percent (16 of 32) efficiency rate in scoring points on her first serve. Although the Russian’s serve was broken twice, Andreeva broke Ruse’s serve five times in 12 opportunities. She outpointed her opponent 70-51.

“I’m very happy with the win,” Andreeva said during her on-court interview. “Gabby is a very tricky opponent. She plays very aggressive tennis. As soon as I convinced myself that if she plays so well – that there’s nothing I can do about it – I just changed my game and did something myself. I felt like that was the turning point in the match.”

On Sunday, Andreeva will face 97th-ranked Austrian Anastasia Potapova, who defeated 104th-ranked qualifier Donna Vekic of Croatia, 6-4, 6-2, in one hour and 19 minutes. It marked the first time Potapova has beaten Vekic in three career meetings and it keeps her hopes alive of winning the Linz title for the second time after her 2023 title run in her tournament debut. Of the four Austrians who began in the main draw, Potapova is the lone remaining.

Potapova, who gained a double-break 4-1 lead in the opening set and jumped ahead 4-0 to start the second set, struck six aces, won 76 percent (28 of 37) of her first-serve points, saved six of seven break points and broke Vekic’s serve four times eight tries. She outpointed her opponent 65-46 and handled the tough moments the best. Potapova has not dropped a set all week in Linz.

As Potapova chases after her seventh career WTA Tour title and first at WTA 500-level, she’s the first player representing Austria to reach the Linz final since the tournament joined the WTA Tour calendar in 1991. It should be noted that Potapova represented Russia when the won the title in 2023.

“Thank you everyone, I don’t know what to say,” Potapova said during her on-court interview. “I honestly cannot describe what I feel now, making my first 500 final, first time playing here as an Austrian in front of you. Everything that is happening right now is for the first time in my life.

“You don’t know how much I’m thankful for your support. For me, it means the world.”

In doubles, the second semifinal took place between No. 1 seeds Sorana Cirstea of Romania and Zhang Shuai of China against No. 4 seeds Ulrikke Eikeri of Norway and Quinn Gleason of the United States and was won by Cirstea and Zhang, 7-5, 6-2, in one hour and 20 minutes.

The winners, playing together for the first time this season, saved four of eight break points and converted seven of 10 break-point opportunities. Cirstea and Zhang outpointed their opponents 66-44, putting away the victory on their fourth match-point opportunities.

Cirstea and Zhang, who have not dropped a set, will advance to Sunday’s final against unseeded Jesika Maleckova and Miriam Skoch of Czechia.

For Cirstea, who turned 36 this week in Linz and is playing her final year on the WTA Tour, it’s one last opportunity to play in Austria. “It’s been a special week for me, celebrating my birthday here and reaching the quarterfinals in singles,” she said. “Although I lost to Mirra [Andreeva], it was a good match, and now I get another chance at a final [in doubles].

“I’m very happy to play with Shuai. We have a lot of fun together on the court. She’s so smart and always tells me where to go – and I listen to her. It’s been amazing for me to be in Linz one more time. I love Austria and I’m happy to play a final here.”
