Stefanos Tsitsipas advanced to his second consecutive semi-final on the ATP Challenger Tour with a 6-2, 6-3 upset win over top seed Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany at the €127,000 AON Open – Memorial Giorgio Messina in Genova on Friday evening.
The #NextGenATP player from Greece, who entered the main draw with a wild card, won 85 per cent of his first service points, didn’t face a break point and capitalized on four of his own nine chances to finish the encounter in one hour and eight minutes.
Next up for Tsitsipas, who fell in the semi-finals of the Slovenian Open last month to eventual champion Sergiy Stakhovksy, will be Marton Fucsovics. The tournament’s number eight and last seeded player left in the singles draw emerged victorious from the all-Hungarian-battle with Attila Balazs, winning 6-7, 6-2, 7-5. Fucsovics won 111 of the 208 total points played to prevail after two hours and 35 minutes.
Earlier in the day, Guillermo Garcia-López beat Italian wild card entry Matteo Donati 6-4, 6-2 to face Stefano Napolitano in the stage of the final four. The World No. 190 from Italy edged past compatriot and qualifier Andrea Basso 7-6, 6-4 in one hour and 41 minutes.
