Johannes Haerteis will join fellow German Peter Torebko in the third round of the Internazionali Di Tennis Citta’ Dell’Aquila. The 23-year-old from Nuremberg knocked off No. 6 seeded Croat Nino Serdarusic, winning 7-6(5), 6-3 on a sunny and hot Wednesday afternoon in the capital city of the Abruzzo region.
Haerteis sent down three aces and won 71 per cent of his first-service points to secure victory in one hour and 38 minutes.“I played two good matches here, very solid and I am pleased to advance to the next round,” Haerteis told Tennis TourTalk.
“I played here last year and returned to l’Aquila this week, as I really like the conditions. We are at about 700 metres above sea level and I am used to play at altitude. It’s faster than in the last tournaments I competed in Augsburg and Meerbusch. Unfortunately I had to retire in my last match against Benjamin Hassan with a rib injury and I have come here on the off chance but now I feel physically well again.”
The World No. 412 will next take on ITF-entry Juan Pablo Ficovich of Argentina. “Each round is very difficult at this level. I don’t know him but I will do some research on YouTube.”

Taberner tames Tabilo
On Court 1, Carlos Taberner knocked out the No. 2 seed of the €46,600 ATP Challenger event by defeating Alejandro Tabilo of Chile 6-4, 6-7(7), 6-0. The 22-year-old Spaniard capitalized on six of his 10 break point chances to prevail after two hours and 30 minutes.

“He is a very good player but I was very solid today,” Taberner told Tennis TourTalk. “He played very well in the second set but I didn’t go down and tried to focus on my serve and stayed aggressive.”
The Valencia resident arrived at the “City of 99” after spending two weeks in Germany at the ATP Challenger events in Augsburg and Meerbusch, where he made it into the semi-finals. “It’s totally different tennis here. In the first round I suffered a lot. I needed to adapt my game but now I am ready for the tournament.”
Alcaraz Garfia falls, Martin starts L’Aquila campaign
On Grandstand, Frederico Ferreira Silva held off 16-year-old Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz Garfia. The 24-year-old Portuguese outlasted the surging teenager, who has been coached by former World No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero since September last year, by the score of 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Ferreira Silva outpointed his opponent 102-91 after two hours and 28 minutes and will next take on Thiago Seyboth Wild, who emerged victorious from the all-Brazilian affair with No. 4 seed Thomaz Bellucci 7-5, 7-6(4).
Late in the day, top seed Andrej Martin opened his title bid with a comfortable 6-3, 6-2 win over Italian Gianluigi Quinzi. The World No. 137 from Slovakia saved five of the six break points he faced, converting four of his own 13 opportunities to finish the encounter after one hour and 26 minutes. Martin will play Torebko in the third round at the Circolo Tennis L’Aquila. Thursday’s matches will start at 10 am.
