SANT JOAN DESPÍ, December 15, 2015
The town of Sant Joan Despí, located in the province of Barcelona in Catalonia, welcomes the Spanish players for the Mapfre National Tennis Championships starting with the singles main draw on Tuesday. It is the 102nd edition of the men’s competition and the 88th for women’s.
Tommy Robredo is top-seed of the men’s draw. The 33-year-old from Hostalric, champion from 2002 and finalist of 2001, ended this year’s season as number 42 in the ATP rankings. His best result in 2015 came in Bastad, where he finished as runner-up losing the final to Benoit Paire in straight sets.
His main rival will be second seed Albert Montanes from Sant Carles de la Rapita. The current world number 116 became Spanish National Champion in 2001 and reached the quarterfinals at the ATP 250 events in Quito and Kitzbühel this season.
Third favourite will be Adrián Menéndez-Maceiras. The world number 143 from Marbella lost three ATP Challenger Finals in 2015: in Bangalore, León and Noumea. Menéndez captured his last title in 2010 at an ITF Future event in Spain on hard court.
Roberto Carballés-Baena from Tenerife will be tournament’s fourth seed. The 22-year-old lifted his first two ATP Challenger trophies this season in Kenitra and Mohammedia. He also reached the final of the Spanish National Championships last year. All four top-seeds receive a first round bye.
The women’s event is headlined by Lourdes Dominguez, the current world number 101 in WTA rankings. The 2006 champion and 2003 finalist will be accompanied by Tita Torró, winner in 2012, Sara Sorribes as well as Laura Pous, triple champion from 2004, 2010 and 2013.
