Italian qualifier Mattia Bellucci knocked off No. 2 seed Adrian Mannarino of France with a 7-6(6), 4-6, 6-3 victory on Wednesday, advancing to the quarterfinals of the Atlanta Open.
Bellucci, 23, dominated with 17 aces compared to Mannarino’s 10 and successfully saved 10 out of 11 break points. Despite Mannarino evening the score at 3-3 in the third set, Bellucci surged ahead, winning the final three games to secure his spot in the stage of the last eight of the ATP Tour 250 tournament, where he will face another Frenchman, Arthur Rinderknech. The encounter lasted two hours and 41 minutes.
Rinderknech defeated Australian lucky loser Adam Walton 7-6(4), 6-3 in one hour and 32 minutes.
