The quarterfinals at the € 42,500 ATP Challenger Città di Como are set, as the second round matches concluded on Thursday.
Second seed Andrej Kuznetsov celebrated his seventh consecutive match win, beating Gastao Elias 7-6, 6-3. The 24-year-old Russian won 81% of his first service points and capitalized on three of his 11 break points to prevail after one hour and 26 minutes.
Kuznetsov will meet Carlos Gómez-Herrera next. The 25-year-old Spaniard emerged victorious from the battle of the qualifiers with Italian Lorenzo Sonego, winning 6-3, 6-0. Gómez-Herrera didn’t have to face a break point and converted four of his own to close the match after only 52 minutes, reaching his first quarterfinal on Challenger level, as well as second overall, since Sevilla in September 2013.
With eighth seed Roberto Carballés-Baena, another Spanish player made it to the quarterfinals. The 22-year-old from the Canary Islands dismissed Juan Carlos Saez, winning 6-3, 6-0 in 70 minutes. Carballés-Baena won 69% of his first service points and converted five of his 11 break points to face reach the stage of the final eight.
There he is going to face Daniel Brands. The former world number 51 from Germany defeated Lorenzo Giustino, winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Brands withstood 11 aces of his opponent and fired seven of his own to advance after one hour and 30 minutes to reach his sixth quarterfinal of the season.
